Sightseeing in Wieliczka

Guides for anyone planning a visit to Wieliczka. We cover the Salt Mine, the Chapel of St. Kinga and the Saltworks Castle, and suggest how much time to set aside and how to plan a day or a whole weekend.

What to see in Wieliczka

Most visitors come to Wieliczka for the Salt Mine. The Tourist Route starts at the Daniłowicz Shaft (Szyb Daniłowicza) and leads through chambers with salt sculptures to the Chapel of St. Kinga, while the Miners' Route starts at the Regis Shaft in the town centre. Above ground there is the Upper Market Square (Rynek Górny), the graduation tower in Kinga Park and the Saltworks Castle (Zamek Żupny), the former seat of the Kraków Saltworks, which is under renovation until the end of 2028.

In this category we bring together everything that helps you plan a visit. You will find ready-made plans for one and two days, a description of the chapel and its reliefs, the history of the castle and a way to combine Wieliczka and Kraków in a single trip by car.

How to plan your visit

Mine tickets are sold for a specific entry time, so it makes sense to build the day around that time. The Tourist Route itself takes a few hours, and there are plenty of stairs underground. It is easiest to arrive with time to spare, leave the car close to the Daniłowicz Shaft and explore the rest of the town on foot, as the Saltworks Castle, the graduation tower and the Upper Market Square are only a few minutes' walk from the mine.

Frequently asked questions

How much time do you need to visit Wieliczka?

For the Tourist Route in the mine alone, set aside half a day. If you also plan a walk around the town, the graduation tower and lunch, it is more comfortable to give Wieliczka a whole day or a weekend.

Is the Saltworks Castle open to visitors?

According to the Kraków Saltworks Museum, the castle is under renovation until the end of 2028. You can see it from the outside and learn about the history of the saltworks on the Museum Route in the mine.

Can you combine Wieliczka and Kraków in one day?

Yes, with a sensible plan. It is best to visit the mine in the morning and drive to Kraków in the afternoon for a few chosen sights, such as Wawel and the Old Town.
